TEAR-PHIL EastEnders reveals emotional Sam Mitchell exit plot as Walford legend leaves soap amid cancer storyline

EASTENDERS has confirmed how Sam Mitchell will bow out of Albert Square following her recent health scare.

Kim Medcalf’s trouble-maker Sam – who rejoined the BBC soap late last year – sparked concern after discovering a lump in her breast.

Following a period of secrecy, Sam eventually confided in Phil, Jack and Denise, leading to a formal diagnosis.

After a successful surgical procedure and a stint recuperating at her brother’s, the fierce Mitchell female is now on the mend.

With a clean bill of health on the horizon, she is set to swap the East End for sunnier climes.

In upcoming scenes set to air next week, Sam gets ready to leave the Square to return home, but not before supporting Lily Slater as they mark the anniversary of the tragic death of Martin Fowler.

Following a heart-to-heart with Lily, Sam comes to a realisation and recognises how much she needs her family.

“It’s time for Sam to head back to Spain to continue her cancer treatment, after being surrounded by her loved ones over the festive period and in the lead-up to her important lumpectomy,” an EastEnders insider told Digital Spy.

“But first she pays it forward by supporting Lily through a difficult day – will the teen’s wise words change Sam’s mind about leaving?”

The award-winning soap worked with Breast Cancer Now, as well as experts in the field, to ensure the storyline was handled correctly.

Sally Kum, associate director of nursing and health information at Breast Cancer Now previously explained: “Sam’s experience will resonate with thousands of EastEnders viewers.

“We’ve drawn on our insights and extensive expertise supporting people affected by breast cancer to help guide this storyline and ensure it’s portrayed authentically.

“We know that the earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the chances of successful treatment and, ultimately, of lives being saved.

“As such, EastEnders is delivering a vital health message by raising awareness of the importance of breast checking, knowing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer, and getting any new or unusual breast changes checked by a GP.”

As one Mitchell exits – another relative pops up. It comes after the return of Mark Fowler Jr, the son of Grant Mitchell and Michelle Fowler.

He was conceived during a one-night-stand and born in 1996.

Mark Jr was last seen in 2016 when he discovered that Grant was his father after getting close with Courtney Mitchell, who he did not realise at the time was his half-sister.

Mark returns to Walford to join his older sister Vicki Fowler, portrayed by Alice Haig, and the Mitchell family.
