Cain a shell of himself in Emmerdale as cancer terror overwhelms him

Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) is struggling to admit something in Emmerdale. He’s scared.

The beloved character was diagnosed with prostate cancer last week, and at the moment the only two people who know are Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) and Cain’s best friend Liam Cavanagh (Jonny McPherson).

Cain is reluctant to tell Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) about his health news because she’s currently in prison. Despite being innocent, Moira is facing a double murder charge after bodies were found on her land, and a number of other crimes Celia Daniels (Jaye Griffiths) committed.

Due to the overwhelming amount of stress Moira is under, Cain is taking the approach of pretending everything is fine. She has been told that Cain’s mass just needs to be monitored by doctors, and thinks he’s managing relatively well on the farm.

In reality, Cain is finding it seriously difficult to run the garage, the farm, look after Kyle (Huey Quinn) and Isaac (Bobby Dunsmuir), and look after himself.

Because he’s not doing a very good job at the latter, Sarah has made sure she doesn’t leave Cain’s side where his cancer journey is concerned. In this evening’s episode, she joined her Granddad at the hospital for another consultation ahead of his operation.

Cain’s doctor explained that his operation won’t be until April due to the waiting list, and also went into detail about the side effects that can occur after the surgery. Two of these were incontinence and erectile dysfunction, and Cain was uncomfortable at the fact Sarah was sat beside him listening to it all.

The GP also made it clear that the path that lies ahead for Cain will change him completely.

At home, Sarah tried to get Cain to talk about the consultation but he completely refused. Liam attempted to step in and get him to open up that evening, but even standing in the middle of a field drinking beer wasn’t enough to get Cain to admit how terrified he is.

As Sarah and Liam pondered over how much Cain’s diagnosis is going to change him, we saw him in his bedroom all alone.

The hard-faced Mr Dingle looked consumed with anxiety but without Moira by his side, will he find a way to admit how he’s feeling to Liam and Sarah?

‘I think it will change him’, star Jeff Hordley said.

‘I think when something like this happens to you, your life suddenly has a different lens on it, a different filter on it. I think it will certainly take him into a different headspace.

‘It’s definitely going to change him, for sure. I don’t think we’re going to have a return to the Cain of old, that’s for sure.’
